Creators of American Horror Story are keeping the plot and setting of the new season under close wraps, but several sources are connecting it to the Roanoke settlement disappearance of 1590.
TMZ and other outlets published several pictures of a colonial-style house and the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post. Cast members Angela Basset and Kathy Bates have been seen connected to the home as well as new cast member Cuba Gooding Jr.
Sir Walter Raleigh sailed to Roanoke Island in 1587 with 115 colonists, but found the original settlement deserted. The colonists feared for their lives, but the crew refused to let them back on the ship. They tried to make a life on the island, but relations with local tribes were tenuous at best, and John White was sent back to England to plead their case and request help.
The war with Spain caused White to delay his return home for three years. When he finally arrived, the colonists were gone, and the only clue was “CROATOAN” carved into a post. The colony was not only deserted, but houses and fortifications were dismantled.
The mystery of the Roanoke colony disappearance persisted with theories ranging from an attack or integration into area tribes to more supernatural reasons. It has been the fodder for many movies and television shows including Supernatural and Sleepy Hollow. This mystery may have interested the creators for American Horror Story and influenced season 6.
