There are few houses in the United States more unusual that the Winchester Mystery House. It has been the source of rumors of the paranormal for decades, and now one of the leading ladies of Hollywood is in talks to portray the eccentric matriarch of the house.
Helen Mirren is known for her talented portrayals of powerful women, and she’ll be telling the story of the enigmatic Sarah Winchester in the film, “Winchester.” The Oscar winner is finalizing the deal and is expected to take the role.
Winchester’s story began innocently enough, but soon turned macabre following the death of her husband and daughter. Winchester believed her family was cursed by all the death caused by the Winchester repeating rifle and was convinced the only way to keep the dark spirits at bay was to continuously add-on to the massive mansion.
Contractors worked on the house non-stop for years, often creating strange rooms and staircases as well as a door that opens to nothing. There rarely seemed to be any rhyme or reason to the expansion, but expand it did.
Work continued on the house until Winchester’s death in 1922. Construction finally ended at 160 rooms. Along with Mirren, the movie will be written and directed by brothers Michael and Peter Spierig. For more information about the mansion, visit their website.
