Kevin Bacon is no stranger to horror, but it’s been a long time since Stir of Echoes and Hollow Man. Horror Junction staffers have spent countless hours playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, and now we can add one more horror movie to our list, “The Darkness.”
The movie stars Bacon and Silent Hill’s Radha Mitchell as a couple that takes their family to the Grand Canyon for vacation, but wind up waking an evil spirit that tags along for the trip. As someone who has visited the Grand Canyon on occasion, I have yet to bring home anything except cheap touristy trinkets, but in Hollywood every vacation ends in paranormal activity.
The movie also features Gotham’s future Batman, David Mazouz, Once Upon a Time’s savior herself, Jennifer Morrison, Agents of Shield’s Ming-Na Wen and comedic genius Paul Reiser. That’s quite the cast list for what IMDB.com calls an independent movie.
What makes this movie even a little sweeter is that Bacon and Morrison worked together once before in Stir of Echoes. A very young Morrison played tortured ghost Samantha Kozac. Doesn’t it just give you all the feels?
While it has an impressive cast list, the movie itself leaves a little to be desired, according to the many comments and reviews on IMDB.com. I, who once had the pleasure of seeing The Bacon Brothers in concert, have a glimmer of hope that Bacon can pull this one from the fire and live up to his once storied talent.
It’s available to watch on Amazon video is you want to spend $15, but I’ll wait for it to come to Netflix. If the movie has one saving grace, it’s that Blumhouse made it. Blumhouse is famous for making good movies on a shoestring budget. While I doubt this will be of the caliber of Insidious, I still think it has potential despite IMDB commenters.
