The chronicles of Alice and the Umbrella Corporation are coming to a close with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, and Sony Pictures just released a new teaser trailer.
The new movie brings together Alice and several characters from the previous movie as they make a final stand against the AI Red Queen and countless hordes of zombies that are in their way. The original Resident Evil came out in 2002 and featured Milla Jovovich as Alice, an Umbrella employee with amnesia, as she helped a team of soldiers sent by the company to retake the facility.
Since that fateful day, Alice has traveled the world seeking out Umbrella, trying to find not only the leaders, but also where she fits into the overall scheme. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter features Alice along with Claire Redfield, Albert Wesker and others returning to Raccoon City and the mansion that started it all.
Alice has gone through a lot in the Resident Evil films, including developing telekinetic powers and losing friends left and right (R.I.P Oded Fehr.)
Resident Evil is based on the Capcom game of the same name and helped usher in video game adaptations and the action horror movie. Arguably, the most successful of all video game adaptations to date, the final movie is bittersweet.
While the first few movies were well received, the most recent in the franchise have lost their luster. The movies are filled with intense action scenes, zombie dogs and other creatures featured in the games, but all the special effects can’t replace a neglected storyline. Too many times the audience was left with a WTF expression as the credits rolled.
The creators have the opportunity to make this last stand something epic, not only for the characters and franchise, but for the audience. Let’s hope they can end it on a positive note.
