As a big fan of the original “The Mummy” (Brendan Fraser version, not Boris Karloff) I was more than a little skeptical when they planned on rebooting it with Tom Cruise. Universal Pictures released today the first official teaser for the movie and I must admit that I’m intrigued.
The film stars Cruise as Nick Morton, I was totally hoping for Rick O’Connell, and Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll and I assume at some point as Mr. Hyde. The Mummy is portrayed by Sofia Boutella, an Egyptian princess who wakes up with a hankering for some vengeance and a severe case of dry skin.
The movie will traverse both the Middle East and London in what appears to be the modern day. The movie is a kick off to the already once rebooted Universal Monster label following in the rather tepid footsteps of Benicio Del Toro’s “The Wolfman” and Luke Evan’s “Dracula Untold.”
Neither one made much of an impact at the box office, but the hype surrounding “The Mummy” is guaranteed to be epic, but we’ll see if it can become a box office success. The original Universal Monsters movies from the golden age of B-movies have become iconic to the medium.
Check out the trailer for “The Mummy” below and a full-blown trailer is set for release on Sunday.
